LASIK is the world’s most common method of freeing human eyes from the need for glasses and contact lenses, and has positively transformed the lives of tens of millions of people over the past 30 years. Re:Vision understand that this can sound like an intimidating process to fully grasp, and thus offer a free laser suitability assessment as well as offer all the additional information you might want before taking the first steps toward perfect, healthy vision.
Nearsightedness or myopia is a common vision condition in which you can see objects near to you clearly, but objects farther away are blurry. It occurs when the shape of your eye causes light rays to bend (refract) incorrectly, focusing images in front of your retina instead of on your retina, and is the most common refractive error among children and young adults.
Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, and other contributing factors include a cornea that is too curved for the length of the eyeball or a lens inside the eye that is too thick. Distant objects and your driving vision will be blurry if you have myopia, but you still will be able to see nearby objects clearly. This is why the condition is also called nearsightedness or shortsightedness.
Myopia can be corrected with standard prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, which refocus light on the retina. Specialised myopia control glasses are also available that can slow the progression of nearsightedness. Once nearsighted children become young adults and their vision stabilises, myopia can be permanently treated with refractive surgery. LASIK is the most popular surgical procedure to correct nearsightedness.
