Posting images on social media platforms is not as straightforward as it looks. According to leading social media marketing agency Likeable Lab, social media platforms have specific size requirements to ensure that images are presented in ideal resolutions.

As visual content is a pillar of any social media strategy, Likeable Lab has compiled a handy guide to help brands better understand social media image requirements in 2020.

Facebook provides a list of image size specifications for profile images, cover photos, shared photos, and shared links. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, offers specifications for profile images, video thumbnails, and feed images in square, landscape, and portrait orientations.

For LinkedIn, Likeable Lab has provided image specs for background cover images, profile photos, company cover images, company profile photos, shared images, and link posts or ads.

Lastly, Twitter offers image specs for header photos, profile photos, and instream photo previews.

Keep in mind that these are considered minimum image requirements. Social media platforms will typically publish images at their specified dimensions, meaning that smaller images will need to be stretched and larger images compressed. Compressing images causes less distortion than stretching but uploading images precisely at their specified dimensions ensures the highest quality resolution. Likeable Lab has found that abiding by the latest image size requirement for social media platforms helps create a more seamless experience for users.

Brands can use Likeable Lab’s helpful guide as a reference to create eye-popping posts or update social media profiles.
