The Project’s Tony ? went to meet the Settlers Retirement Craft Group to find out about their redoubtable efforts on behalf of the Premmie Knitting Club. Courtney Bennet is the founder of the Premmie Knitting Club, as she was a prem baby herself, and she wanted to give back to the NICU. She wanted to do something to say “thanks” and over the years it’s grown heaps, and now they donate thousands of garments to NICUs right across New Zealand. Courtney doesn’t herself knit, but she organises everyone and makes sure the knitting gets to the NICU.
Barbara McNab of the Settlers Retirement Craft Group explains that they have been knitting and making crafts for about seven years. However, during the COVID-19 lockdown, she found Courtney’s Premmie Knitting Club online, so she joined up. As she says, most people of her age group have learned to knit and enjoy knitting for the babies.
Courtney goes on, “Every day I am amazed at the generosity and kindness of the knitters, and some days I receive hundreds of items from just one knitter. It’s just amazing that they do so much knitting for someone they don’t even know.”
If you love your knitting, or are keen to learn, get amongst the virtual club, or you can donate some wool to keep the knitters going. Premmie Knitting Club (PKC) is a registered New Zealand charity (CC57485) providing knitted items for NICUs in New Zealand and Australia. They are a virtual tribe of knitters knitting for premature babies and fundraising for premmie related causes.
You can donate direct to PKC or your closest NICU, and for more information on retirement apartments Auckland, retirement villages North Shore Auckland and lifestyle retirement villages please go to https://www.settlersalbany.co.nz .
